Using dataEdit
dataEdit can be used both for editing an existing data base or for starting a new
one. In addition you can create a shopping list based on one or more data base files.
dataEdit's sole purpose is to generate data bases that can be used with ShihtzuSoft's
popular shopping list assistant program, maxShopper.
Startup
First start dataEdit by clicking on the screen icon (or clicking in the Windows Start
Menu)
When dataEdit starts it displays the default database Safeway. This database was
chosen since its information is freely available at Safeway.com and covers most
grocery items.
The largest part of the dataEdit screen (on the left) consists of the category and data
item display. It's basically a two level display with major shopping categories shown
on the left in a tree-view display. Major categories such as Breakfast Products are
displayed to the left and have a "+" or "-" symbol in front. If the catgory tree branch is
closed the symbol is "+" otherwise it's "-". Click on the symbol with the mouse, to
close or open a branch.
Creating /updating a shopping list
To create or update an existing shopping list, click the Shopping List button in
dataEdit. This displays the screen below and starts a blank shopping list
Revise a category name or data item information
To change a category name, first highlight the name in the display; the category
name will then be displayed in the description box. Change the name as needed and
then click the Revise button.
To change a data item, first highlight the data item in the display. Then change the
description, cost or Units as required and then click the Revise button.
Note that the price information is assumed to be in US dollars.
Insert a category name or data item information
To insert a new category, first select an existing category and then type in a new
category name. Click the Insert button.
To insert a new data item, first select a category and highlight one of the existing
data items. Then enter the new item information and click the Insert button.
Note that the text length used in the Description field should be kept short as
possible, since the PDA or smartPhone display is limited in size (about 20 characters).
Adding to the shopping list
To add items to the list just select a category (for example Boxed dinners/sides) and
then select an item within the category, for example, Hamburger Helper. Be sure to
select the quantity needed from the spin control below the tree display (the default is
one). Then click the Add From Database button.
Header fields
maxShopper requires two header fields in the shopping list. You can fill these out by
typing in the header#1 and header#2 fields. You cvan also just accept the default
values entered by dataEdit (the date and "My Shopping List").
Saving the list
To save the current list, click the Save button. The list file is saved in a standard text
format that can be viewed by editors such as notepad.
